While football fans around the country turned their attention to the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium, they enjoyed a wide variety of food, including abocados. This year, Americans were estimated to have consumed almost 32 percent more avocados than last year, or a total of 104 million pounds and some 208 million avocados during the Big Game.Oddly enough, the amount of avocados consumed during the NFL Championship was more than 230 times the weight of the Statue of Liberty. “Avocados and the big game go hand in hand” said Emiliano Escobedo, executive director of the Hass Avocado Board. “We have seen consistent growth for many years. Since 2000, consumption (during the Super Bowl time period) has increased 1,200 percent”.Last year, football fans across the country consumed around 79 million pounds or 158 million Hass avocados during Super Bowl parties. It’s not only sports events that reflect America’s passion for avocados. Last year, Americans ate an impressive amount, almost 1.7 billion pounds, or approximately 3 billion Hass avocados. Some 98 percent of the avocados sold in the United States are of the Hass variety, which contain naturally good fats and are cholesterol-free.
