West One Music: We really seek an alliance with production and offer a more real, credible and right content

Laura Luna recently took over West One Music’s Music Licensing consultancy for Mexico. Luna, who has extensive experience in music publishing, said that the company has an extensive catalog of Latin musicians and composers. “We no longer only aim to be able to place certain artists or themes in different productions, but to make an alliance with the production being developed, in order to offer even more real, credible and right content,” she said enthusiastically.

Luna mentioned the projects that West One Music has been working on from Mexico, such as Cómo Sobrevivir Soltero and the second season of El Presidente, both from Amazon; the feature film Soy tu Fan by BTF Media, distributed by Disney, as well as trailers and commercials.

“We are very fortunate since more and more producers are entrusting us with their projects, which is a great commitment in order to add more talent and Latin production. There is still a lot to develop,” she highlighted.

According to Luna, for a long time there was a musical limitation regarding Latin content. “Those of us who have grown up in this culture know that there is a wide cultural background in terms of the diversity of music and that each region has particular idiomatic expressions, which manifest through music. Somehow we can recall stories and places through music. And West One Music has the SOMOS label, which is authentically Latin.”

Lemon Studios’ La Venganza de las Juanas is an example of the great work they managed to do by setting the production to music. It was a joint effort between the editorial and production teams, to match the voices and the adaptations they had, they were able to link the themes and make an incredible interpretation. “The credit belongs to Felipe Arévalo from the SOMOS label,” Luna said.

She explained that to ease the challenges faced by the productions’ musical coordinators, they are working on being able to grant global licenses. “This allows us that in a single agreement they can have access to all the options: from the license of our themes to the different productions that can be tailored, ranging from a commercial to a complete production. There is increasingly more production seeking to have a backup of a global license,” she explained.
