Telemundo Deportes: 2018 World Cup broke streaming records with 2 billion minutes visualized

Reflecting on future coverage of big sports events, Ray Warren, president of Telemundo Deportes, expressed that they are satisfied with the achievements after the first broadcast of a World Cup for Telemundo and that onwards it is necessary to continue with tech innovations.

“Our goal was to provide the most authentic World Cup ever seen. We achieved an unprecedented level of innovation in the digital aspect. I think our goals were fulfilled,” said Warren.

He highlighted that 2 billion minutes were watched via streaming, breaking current records, even NBC’s, exceeded only by the Super Bowl.

“With our friends at FOX we had a bilingual competition, since we thought we could win some of those TV viewers, and, at the end of the day 81% of the bilingual audience came to Telemundo,” he commented.

He said that for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, they expect to see many more 4K TVs (in this 2018 World Cup, Telemundo provided some 4K contents at the cable operator level). He added that for 2022, the event would also be aired mainly during the day; therefore, the digital audience will be larger.

He mentioned that in 2019 there would be two big sports events the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France and the 2019 America’s Cup in Brazil. “We are going to have World Cup games in the morning and in the evening America’s Cup games. Our global brand is to have the biggest sports events in the World”.
