Smithsonian Channel has grown in the region throughout 2019 by entering different operators such as NET Claro in Brazil. This was announced by David Royle, EVP and Chief Programming Officer of the signal.

As for programming novelties for the rest of the year, Royle mentioned the launch of Galápagos with David Attenborough, Volcanes: Destrucción Dual and Mystic Britain.

“We are working on new productions with Mexican, Brazilian, and Argentinean talents. We have two fabulous films that the Brazilian Lawrence Werbe made for us: El Oasis Esmeralda de Brasil and Jaguarland, and there are more original Latin American productions we will announce soon,” he added.

He does not see the appearance of the Royle digital platforms as the competition but as an opportunity.

“The pay television industry has a lot to offer clients, but it needs to expand the ways in which it allows its clients to experiment with its programs. It continues to be the dominant player in the industry with a great client base and must offer them a broad range of packages at different prices and make the programs available on all the platforms. Those who do well in the future will be the ones who offer their clients the greatest variety of visualization options and the greatest variety of packages. Smithsonian Channel is well-positioned to help pay-TV operators this way because we have broad rights in all the platforms, for almost all our programming,” he highlighted.
