La Casa de las Flores was launched in August on Netflix and has been a hit that has surprised even its own creators. “I am surprised how it has permeated other countries. We never imagined it would be this massive. We are focused on doing something so niche-like, with such peculiar aesthetics and elements, that after it exploded and became a hit,” said Manolo Caro, director and producer of the series when he was on #VisitaPRODU.

The young producer points out that content that makes people laugh, speaks of family love and topics that are not touched in other parts, are the ingredients of this new Netflix phenomenon. “It is a formula that has been used often, a family with a business that becomes a space to share emotional and work conflicts. I love flowers; I always wanted to have a flower shop and fulfilled my dream with La Casa de las Flores. Additionally, the metaphor that says that the most beautiful of flowers has thorns is very present in the series.”

He dismisses discussions over whether it is a telenovela or not without any complexes. “It poses no conflict for me that they call it a telenovela. The format, the care, and topics are not what are going to be covered on an open network. But the DNA and the root come from telenovela and melodrama. I heard a critic say that it could be called a neotelenovela and I think it could perfectly well be a reinvention of a telenovela.”

The peculiarity of the project comes from the platform it was presented on, assures Caro. “This project is made with freedom and we have been able to tackle it with total self-confidence. It is a project we conceived from start to end without letting ourselves be influenced by rating points or how a certain character is doing because Netflix launches the thirteen episodes one day and that´s it”.
