Journalist and director Iván Kasanzew: The documentary La Muerte de Dios about Maradona is the true story of the man behind the soccer star

The documentary La Muerte de Dios (1×87′), about Diego Armando Maradona, premiered on November 25, 2021, in Latin America on Prime Video; in Italy on Sky Italia, and on the 27th in the US on TelevisaUnivision’s ViX platform. It was directed, written, and narrated by the Argentine journalist and film director, IvánKasanzew, produced by Belinda Andretti-Kasanzew’s Two Flamingos Production Inc. and Guido Rud’s FilmSharks manages its distribution.
Kasansew recalled that the work for this project began in 2018 and it compiles 30 years of videos, interviews, and photos of Maradona. The documentary is divided into ten mini-chapters.
From 2005 to 2020 Kasanzew worked at Univisión and covered four World Cups during that time.
“La Muerte de Dios is the true story of the man behind the soccer star. The film demystifies the idol and calls for reflection. It’s important that this type of documentary is broadcast because today we are a bit confused about the truth. It is an invitation not to be left with just images, but also to try to see what really happened. One learns based on the truth. Many stories have been told about Maradona, but most regarding his soccer talent. As a communicator, I had that desire to tell the true story, a very dramatic and sad story too, I would like that any other athlete repeats it again,” he expressed.
He pointed out that there were many complications to get the material and also the interviews with certain people close to Maradona who did not want to speak without the prior consent of the star. “Producing a documentary on Diego Armando Maradona is very complicated, I would say that it is an almost impossible task if you intend to give it the realistic, raw approach that we gave it,” he said.
“The documentary production began in 2018 and ended when he passed away. It is the true story of the man behind the soccer star, at least for me. I think that in it Maradona talks about his own demons. We also interviewed people very close to him, who revealed a little of his childhood, his relationship with his representative, perhaps he was the one who did not give him the best lessons when he was growing as a person,” he said.
La Muerte de Dios was nominated for the Premios PRODU for Best Series or Biographical Film.
