Canal SUR celebrates 20th anniversary as firstborn Spanish-language network in the U.S.

Canal SUR was founded 20 years ago this September, becoming the first Spanish-language channel in the U.S. to broadcast programming from Latin America. The channel was originally designed specifically for Latin American immigrants living in the U.S. to have a window into their country’s programming. Born in 1992, Canal SUR is the flagship channel for parent company SUR LLC, having paved the way for Spanish-language programming from Latin America to be aired around the world. Canal SUR is renowned for having the greatest variety, widest distribution reach and longest running programming over the last two decades. Today, parent company SUR LLC is an international powerhouse, boasting five distinct ethnic television networks that broadcast programming from 10 countries and 31 channels in Latin America. The cable channels are available via DISH Latino, DIRECTV or local cable providers across the nation. The SUR family of networks includes: Canal SUR {www.canalsur.com}; SUR {www.canalsur.com}; SUR Peru {www.surperu.tv}; Mexico TV {www.mexicotv.tv}; and TV Venezuela {www.tvvenezuela.tv}.“Our vision has always been to reach each and every Hispanic household in the United States, delivering news and current events from our countries of origin. This is a way to preserve our rich cultural history and introduce future generations to their Latin roots,” said Arturo Delgado Pastorino, President of SUR LLC. Today, the SUR family transmits more than 158 hours of programming per week live from the country of origin, 370 hours per week of news and information programming and 162 hours per week of entertainment and sports.
