Mari Urdaneta from 200% Media and showrunner Bibiana Jiménez: It is a bet seeking to normalize diversity through these characters
Showrunner Bibiana Jiménez proposed to Mari Urdaneta from 200% Media to tell the story of Sirenito, a legendary club on the LGBTQI+ circuit in Mexico City.
Urdaneta uses the global success of Rupaul’s drag race as a reference to talk about the impact that this docuseries could have “in a country and a city where machismo and patriarchy rule.”
Jiménez knows the story in depth and says that Sirenito features 12 transsexuals, transgenders, and non-binary people, who impersonate artists such as Ana Gabriel, Dua Lipa, Amy Winehouse, Alejandra Guzmán and at the same time represent different stereotypes of society.
“It is a bet seeking to normalize diversity through these characters,” said Jiménez. “All of these characters went through different transitions, they don’t just dress up to look like those artists. It has other implications, such as the issue of changing their name.”
