Nick Denton, fundador y CEO de Gawker en la corte
Univision Holdings Inc will acquire Gawker Media LLC for $135 million after winning the bid for the bankrupt company by outbidding the U.S. publisher Ziff Davis, that offered $90 million, according the site Recode. This purchase shows how the Hispanic communication company is seeking to expand its properties and is not afraid of a news brand as Gawker, that has often courted controversy and has consolidated a loyal audience, according to Reuters. The strategy of acquiring these new assets aims to attract millennials. Univision already owns The Onion, Fusion and The Flama, and now will control 7 sites within Gawker such as Gizmodo, Lifehacker and Gawker.com, including the popular women’s website Jezebel, and Deadspin, a site devoted to sports. Gawker filed for bankruptcy in June, after facing a $140 million court judgment following an invasion of privacy lawsuit from former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan over the publication of excerpts from a sex video. Nick Denton, CEO at Gawker Media filed for personal bankruptcy earlier this month. The lawsuit was bankrolled by billionaire investor Peter Thiel, who has supported Facebook and is a co-founder of PayPal.
