A new analysis of the Pew Research Center, led by Jens Manuel Krogstad and based on estimations by the U.S. Census Bureau, shows that the annual growth rate of the Hispanic population between 2016 and 2017 had no variations. However, this group continues to account for more of the nation’s overall population growth than any other race or ethnicity, with a growth rate of 2%. After the boom of Hispanic population in the 1990’s driven by immigration and high fertility rates, the Hispanic population’s annual growth rate peaked at 4.2% in 2001, and then started to decline and while the foreign born accounted for 40% of Hispanic annual population growth in 2006, that share dropped to 34% by 2015. According to the Census Bureau’s latest estimates, the Hispanic population reached a record 58.6 million in 2017. They are the second largest ethnic group in the U.S. They continue to disperse across the country, but remain centered in three states: California with 15.3 million, Texas with 10.9 million and Florida with 5.1 million, making up 54% of this population in 2016. Between 2015 and 2016, Texas is the state that has grown the most in Hispanic population, adding 233.000 in that period and what represents 21% of the population increase of this state in that period. Harris County in Texas, which includes the city of Houston, added 39,639 Hispanics in 2016, the largest annual increase of any county in the nation.
