Norberto Zylberberg, CCO and founder of Socialisssima has said – in the light of measures announced by two big retail brands in the U.S. restricting gun sales – that brands have realized they must take a stand on the matter. “Companies can either hide behind the fact that the law allows such sales or they self-regulate. They either sell automatic weapons to kids not even old enough to order a beer at a bar – or they tell those who wrote the gun laws over the last 25 years that they won’t get any more discounts when they rent a car or buy a plane ticket” Zylberberg said. After the massacre at the Parkland high school last February 14 that left 17 dead, Walmart announced it would only sell weapons and ammunition to adults over 21, while Dick’s Sporting Goods promised it would stop selling weapons like the AK-15 assault rifle used in the Parkland shooting, and increased the age for buying any firearm to 21. “Brands tend to use situations like this as a public relations ploy, but in this case there is also a business equation: a large part of the consumer population and the victims of past shootings. And of the ones to come. I think that if corporations are part of the problem, now is the time to take a stand. Because thoughts and prayers aren’t enough,” Zylberberg said.
