Most interesting was producing spots for a truly underrepresented community, says Marcos Cline of Altered.LA

Marcos Cline, Executive Producer and Founder of Altered.LA, spoke about the campaign he produced to promote the Democratic vote in Arizona and motivate the Native American community to go out and vote. “Most interesting for us was producing content for a community that is truly underrepresented. We know so very little about them,” he said. The initiative was born with the idea of “having an impact on the elections and taking Trump out” by motivating people to vote, Cline said. After identifying the states that could potentially have an influence in favor of Joe Biden, “we realized that Arizona has many possibilities of going back to being Democratic, since the race seems to be virtually tied.” Cline and his team found that Native Americans usually vote in very high percentages in favor of Democratic candidates, but exercise their right to vote in much lower percentages than the general population. Altered.LA partnered with The Northeast Arizona Native Democrats organization to create 10 commercials that include the Trump administration’s unfulfilled promises to those communities, interviews with a Native American senator, and a presentation by professional Navajo golfer Notah Begay, who explains the voting process along with other topics. The spots were directed by Alejandro Marquez, with Daniel Gomez Bagby as director of cinematography of the Navajo Nation. The shoot took place at the White Mountain Apache Reservation. “Today, I realize that the process we went through to produce this campaign is a reflection of the message we wanted to convey: Regardless of limitations or if there weren’t many of us or we had scant resources, the important thing was to have a clear objective, come together and make a joint effort, because together we can make a change,” said Alejandro Marquez, director of the campaign.
