Marcos Cline of Altered LA: In NALIP We Get Back to the Basics of Achieving Success

Marcos Cline Altered LA

Marcos Cline, Founder of the Altered.LA production company, was one of the speakers at the Latino Lens Workshop Series organized by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) on April 6, and his presentation was inspired by successful figures who had offered insights about the industry and how they reached the top. “At Sundance, Ben Lopez (CEO of NALIP) and I talked about how good it would be to discuss the business per se, strictly targeting how we all see ourselves as a business, and the role we play in a business scheme larger than ourselves,” he said. With that idea in mind, Cline discussed and analyzed the following topics with a group that had diverse goals and interests: 1- The importance of pinpointing goals and understanding why each of the participants decided to join the industry. 2- Realizing that each one builds a different kind of business and therefore must deal with the difference between B2B and B2C communication. 3- The differences between being a W-2 employee and establishing an S Corp, because of an “understanding that for some there are concrete benefits in tax savings: we talked about what can be done with the money saved (marketing, development of intellectual property, etc.).” 4- The importance of being clear as to the needs and goals of content buyers. 5- Branding and the difference between branding an individual and a company, as presented by Daniel Batistas (CEO – BESE) . 6- The importance of creating an Intellectual Property Library and the difference between the agreements allowing this (shopping agreement, option, buy). Cline is very pleased to take part in these events because of the chance it gives him to reflect on what he has achieved at Altered.LA and before that. “It encourages me to continue growing and, more importantly, it puts me in touch with talented, ambitious people,” he said, adding that “the desire they have to be part of this industry is contagious and we all left even more motivated and prepared to continue giving our best to this industry, which is so rewarding.”
