Luis Miguel Messianu
According to Luis Miguel Messianu, CEO and Creative Chairman of ALMA, the best attitude to assume for 2019 is optimism. On the agency´s LinkedIn account he wrote: “I not only consider myself an Eternal Optimist (a crucial element of my own personal brand), but optimism is a very positive personality trait that most Latinos have going for us.” He said that was the reason he has been doing research and analyzing this topic for so long. He has even gathered quotes on optimism, such as the one by Carl Sandburg: “In these times you have to be an optimist to open your eyes when you awake in the morning,” and the one by Brian Tracy: “Optimism is the one quality more associated with success and happiness than any other.” In that regard, Messianu said that while happiness and optimism are often used interchangeably, there is a vital distinction between the two – or as Suzanne Segerstrom, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Kentucky, put it: “Happiness is an emotion, a feeling. Optimism is a belief about the future.” According to the executive, hope is what makes new immigrants take any job, anywhere, anytime and work from sunrise to sunset, hoping their children will never have to do such backbreaking work in the future. And though he acknowledged that most Latinos are not there yet, he said that “things may get worse or get better or stay the same. Qué será, será. But there’s always next year.” “The way I see it is that we’re in the optimism business. We’re in the business of aspirations. We’re in the business of dreams. And optimism is a synonym for creativity,” he said.
