The number of Instagram users in the USA grew nearly 60% in 2014 and beat Twitter in its growth rate and number of users, having 64.2 million people. By the year 2018 it is expected that the photography social media will reach 106.2 million users and that then the growth rate will be more moderate, according to a study in eMarketer.Given the surprising growth that took place last year, Instagram beat Twitter and became the second biggest social media in the USA. Twitter grew 12.1% approximately in 2014 and reached 48.4 million users. The gap between the number of Twitter and Instagram users will continue to grow in the next years.Teenagers and millennials compose Instagram’s base users. It is expected that by 2019, the prevailing users will be between 12 and 34 years old. The highest penetration remains and will remain between 12 and 17 years old. 61.9% of all North American teenagers use Instagram regularly this year, and by 2019, more than three fourths will be instagrammers.Instagram will also compete with other emerging social media for the attention of young demographic groups, and by extension with the brands that want to invest to reach this group. What is true is that the simple platform with plain content is attractive to all demographic groups, regardless of age or level of digital immersion.
