A historical event took place in the 95th Art Directors Club (ADC) Awards: For the first time ever, a piece submitted by students received the most important award in the film category. The animated short film, Taking the Plunge received the Best in Show award. Big agencies such as Leo Burnett Worldwide, BBDO, R/GA and Dentsu received the most important acknowledgements in the other categories.Taking the Plunge was created with computer art, animation and special effects made by students of the New York School of Visual Arts. It took the students Thaddaeus Andreades, Marie Raoult, Nicholas Manfredi and Elizabeth Ku-Herrero 10 months to finish the project coordinated by Laura Nitz, with the help of professor Joe Burrascano. The story about a botched marriage proposal is narrated in 6:41 minutes in a marine universe full of deep purples and bright blues. A man who prepares to surprise his girlfriend with a wedding ring accidentally loses it in the sea and dives in the water to look for it.”Its a huge honor. Weve been blown away by the success of the film. To hear that it was the first student film to win was mind-blowing” said Elizabeth Ku-Herrero, the student who came up with the idea of the marriage proposal.The work also received an ADC Gold Cube in Motion Animation, and Best Animation at the Student Emmys, among other awards.
