Bernardino fundó en agosto de 2016 Solar Preparatory
The agency Dieste presented in Provoke Weekly one of the characters of their series centered on Latina leaders, who are making a change and influencing positively each day. This edition shows Nancy Bernardino-Lira, Director and Founder of the Solar Preparatory. “It is a story about us, about you and me. The story of a place where opportunities are hard to find. However, the most important thing is the story of a person who worked hard to make the most of each opportunity that she came across” highlighted Maria Yolisma García, Intern in Social Media at Dieste, who wrote the article. Although the educational sector is growing in size and innovation, it has left behind spaces for female leadership in the area of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Bernardino saw this gap and used her education as a platform, not only to try to have access, but to offer opportunities. Bernardino is a first generation Texan, mother of four, who has two undergraduate and two masters degrees. Additionally, she achieved a PhD, that meant a huge representation and example for others who feel they can make it, too. Working at a school, she noticed that Latinas were losing their voice, mostly due to their culture. When she saw herself reflected in them, she decided to create a STEAM school that could allow them to grow in an environment that empowered them. And that is how Solar Preparatory appeared in August 2016.
