Villanueva: Debes ser valiente para defender tu trabajo y tus convicciones
Danny Villanueva, Group Account Director at Dieste wrote a post at Provoke Weekly entitled Rudy’s Rules for Success in Advertising (and life), where he acknowledges what he has learned during his time at the agency. One lesson he mentioned is that creative work must go beyond the basics of the brief. “What makes the difference between sh*t work and exceptional work is acknowledging the intangibles that aren’t spelled out” he wrote. Villanueva shared three rules that have served as the bedrock for his team at Dieste. The first is “Know your sh*t”, which means everyone knows their part and what they’re supposed to do. “More than understanding your role, it is about deeply understanding the needs of the client and what the agency and its talent offer to meet those needs” he said. The second “Bring it” is about being prepared and always on. “In the fast-pace market of today, being adaptable and nimble are core requirements.” And the third “Elevate the work” aims to make the best even better. “If you’ve mastered the first two, then you understand that it’s not enough, and that’s because you need to ‘elevate’ the work, always” he explained. He included a rule that embodies his mentor’s -Rudy- style and is part of his secret sauce: Being “ballsy”. “It’s about having the courage to stand behind your work and your convictions. To be able to stand up to Rudy and tell him why or how something works, is better, or counter to what he thinks or believes absolutely earns his respect … if done following the three rules” Villanueva added.
