Carolina Casares, Director of Media in Spanish for Latin America and Spain at Yahoo, expressed it has been a very dynamic year regarding searches on Yahoo: from local and international politics to Zika and the Olympic Games in Rio. In an article titled Yahoo 2016, Summary of the Year, the executive makes an inventory of the events and stories that caught the Spanish-speaking U.S. and Latin American audience’s attention in the last 12 months.“How does it work? Our tech team has been looking at the Yahoo Search quests, based on criteria such as volume and growth compared with previous periods, to identify topics and provide forecasts” explains Casares. According to Yahoo, the most searched topics among the Spanish-speaking audience during 2016 were: in Argentina, Pope Francis and the America’s Cup, whereas in Mexico it was ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. Among the Hispanic population in the U.S., the most searched news were the U.S. elections, Venezuela and Cuba.
