Jose Papa, director general de Lions Festival
The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity begins today with a total of 32,372 entries from 90 countries in order to compete for 26 Lions awards this year, and with important changes to the delegate experience and awards structure. The 65th edition of the event will run for five days, until Friday 22 June. A streamlined Festival and a simplified award structure will bring much greater focus to each Lion, truly recognizing the best work and delivers it to the biggest audience and ensure that delegates can benefit from the highest quality content program and make the most of their time in Cannes. “Change has always been part of Cannes Lions and the innovations we’re introducing for 2018 mark an exciting new phase in the story of the Festival. Some of the effects from these changes will be felt immediately, while others represent the start of a longer transitional journey. But what they all have in common is that they refocus the festival and ensure that Cannes Lions continues to be the leading global event for the world’s creative communications industries for many years to come”, said Phil Thomas, CEO, Ascential Events and Chairman-elect, Cannes Lions when speaking about the impact of the new plans for the 2018 Festival, last November. Early analysis of the numbers of entries provides revealing insights to the creative communications industry, particularly around client engagement with the awards. It also shows a shift in the type of companies entering the awards with the number of brands entering work increasing by 84% over last year. Jose Papa, Managing Director, Cannes Lions, commented that “this was confirmation of marketing leaders’ increased understanding of the value that creativity has on business and ROI.” Another notable change includes an increase in media owners entering work, up 59% on 2017. “This year’s Festival features more brands than ever before, and there are many thought provoking topics that will be discussed” Papa said when the festival’s schedule was launched last April. “This is a year where the roles, responsibilities, and even the identity of the creative industry is changing. Legends like David Droga and Jeff Goodby will be joined by first-time speakers from Apple, Uber and Amazon in a program packed with new formats that will really bring the big issues to life.”
