Fernando Machado, VP de Gestión Global de Burger King: Queremos que nuestra propuesta sea tomada en serio
Burger King wants to set aside its rivalry with McDonald’s. At least for a day. The fast food giant has proposed its competitor to create a hamburger that is a blend of the Big Mac and the Whopper. The hamburger -named McWhopper- would be sold on Day of Peace (September 21st), in a restaurant that would open only for the occasion in Atlanta, in a parking lot midway between a McDonald´s and a Burger King.McDonald’s, however, didn´t seem too enthusiastic about the idea, and rejected it through a post on its Facebook page saying it´s a “great idea”, but then proposed they do “something bigger to make a difference in a meaningful global effort” on the Day of Peace.Sales proceeds would be donated to Peace One Day, a nonprofit group which fosters world peace by seeking to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace in an initiative that could be coined as McWhopper diplomacy. “We are being entirely transparent with our proposal because we want it to be taken seriously” assured Fernando Machado, Senior VP for Global Brand Management of Burger King. “It would be wonderful if McDonald´s accepted to carry this out”.Burger King made its proposal through a public marketing campaign, by placing full-page ads in The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. McDonald´s Chief Executive Officer told Burger King in the P.D. of the post that “a simple phone call will do next time”.
