The creator and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the launch of Internet.org, a global enterprise whose specific goal is making the Internet available to everyone.Such brands as Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Opera and Samsung are lining up with Zuckerberg to launch the project and kick off a number of programs that will help provide Internet connections to the two-thirds of the worlds population who are now permanently offline. We believe as a company that connection to the Internet is a human right: it improves education, interaction, the possibility of working more efficiently thats why Facebook is making an effort to defend that right Alexandre Hohagen, VP of Latin America for Facebook.Several challenges must be overcome to achieve that objective, such as creating cheaper access through lower cost smartphones, more efficient transmission using data compression tools, and industry help in developing new business models that make it easier to provide underserved people with access to the Internet. Were very excited, above all in the Latin American region where we still have almost 350 million people who arent connected and where the impact of this project could be really interesting Hohagen said.As Zuckerberg said in his white paper: The unfair economic reality is that those already on Facebook have way more money than the rest of the world combined, so it may not actually be profitable for us to serve the next few billion people for a very long time, if ever. But we believe everyone deserves to be connected.
