360 videos, virtual reality and augmented reality were the topics debated during the last day of sessions at the IQ Conference in Miami. A panel of experts in these technologies shed light about what they consider is today’s industry. Is expected that for 2020 virtual reality will generate US$120 billion as an industry. 2.5 million of headsets have been sold, and already more than 1,500 companies have begun to use this technology in their productions. Alejandro Sugich, CEO and Co-Founder at Sumo VR Studio said that this new trend will become mainstream. “Virtual reality and augmented reality is the new media, as cinema and TV.” He added that the new format is beginning a second phase that consists in the “evangelization” of the media, but that “its growth is truly speeding up specially in the U.S. In Mexico we see a young market in virtual reality, 360 and augmented reality, because it’s still not so popular, but it will be. I don’t have doubts because it offers great possibilities in many sectors.” In the entertainment side there aren’t many rules because it’s new, Sugich explained. That’s why he suggested to inquire in important VR content shops, either for documentaries, journalist o filmmakers “simply begin to practice and interact with this new media. You have to adopt this tool within your discipline because it’s certainly the future”.
