Jeffrey Katzenberg, formerly CEO of DreamWorks Animation and chairman of Walt Disney Studios, created NewTV, a platform that will focus on producing short videos to be consumed in smartphones and that will be available through a monthly subscription.

The executive has already raised US$1,000 million. Several media suggest that among the sponsors of the new Katzenberg initiative are Disney itself, 21st Century Fox, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Media, Viacom, eOne, ITV, Lionsgate and MGM.

Katzenberg is leading this project with Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard, who was named NewTV CEO this year.

“If you look at the job here of wanting to create a unique quality of content, we also need quantity — and the only way to achieve that quantity is by being able to get the resources, support and access of the big studios,” told Katzenberg to Variety.

NewTV will be launched by the end of 2019, and it will offer a premium lineup of original, basically short-form series with episodes of 10 minutes each.
