Álex Marín, executive VP, International Distribution for Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada at SPT Sony Pictures Television
Álex Marín, executive VP, International Distribution for Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada at SPT, says local production and distribution of series –both, the ones made by the company in the US, like Shut Eye, and those taken in representation for Latin America, such as Medici– are some of Sony Pictures Television´s (SPT) priorities.
When consulted on the consolidations and changes that are taking place in many of their client companies, Marín answered: “At the end of the day, consumers dictate what must be done to satisfy the demand for audiovisual content. Also, the acceleration of changes in the usufruct of these rights, leads me to constantly reexamine company structures.”
He expressed that, as a result of this constant review, Sony decided to open an office in Colombia. “Five or 10 years ago we would have never considered doing this, in part because of the amount of production we have there, in part because of Colombia´s geographic location, and also due to the great relationship we have with the two or three existing open TV partners and the digital platforms they have there.”
For Marín, the additional rights that digital platforms pose is a hot topic this year. “Nowadays, the use of digital platforms allows us to see content not only on a phone or tablet, but to download it temporarily in order to be able to watch it when we don’t have internet access,” he explains.
