Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced today that it will produce in conjunction with Dopamine (new content company of Grupo Salinas), an epic series about the life of Mary Magdalene. It is the first time that the story of this iconic biblical character is brought to the small screen, in what promises to be one of the most ambitious series that have occurred in Spanish.
María Fernanda Yepes (La Piloto, Rosario Tijeras) will play María Magdalena, Manolo Cardona (Narcos, 2091, El Cartel) will give life to Jesus, and Andrés Parra (The Commander, Pablo Escobar: The Master of Evil) will be Pedro. María Magdalena is written by Lina Uribe (La Querida del Centauro), Darío Vanegas (La Querida del Centauro) and Jaqueline Vargas (In Treatment), and has the executive production of Daniel Ucros (Blue Demon) and Juan Pablo Posada (Rosario Tijeras).
Angélica Guerra, SVP & MD Production for Latin America & US Hispanic of Sony Pictures Television commented that: “There have been many theories around the figure of Mary Magdalene because she is one of the best known, controversial and intriguing women of the bible. We have in our hands a project of enormous proportions, innovative and original, which we hope will mark a new genre of Spanish content.”
Fidela Navarro, CEO of Dopamine, points out: “It is exciting to start with this production because it contains our essence: it is an immense and daring story, which addresses the most modern and sensitive facet of an iconic woman, through a narrative and style with own stamp, different. It is a bet, undoubtedly, for originality and quality. “
Álex Marín, SPE’s International Distribution EVP for Latin America, Caribbean, and Canada SPE said: “This co-production represents an important step forward in SPE’s relationship with Grupo Salinas.”
