According to Luis Fernández, Executive News VP at Telemundo, objective, rigorous, and contrasted information has more value than ever. “These are not good times, not even for us or for our families, or for anybody. The crisis due to the coronavirus is an unprecedented emergency. At Noticias Telemundo we are dedicated to information, and there is no better service to our community, our people, than to offer them the best and most complete information. That is the commitment of the Noticias Telemundo team,” he added.
Fernández explained that they show what Latinos need to know, following the values of the profession: truthfulness, rigor, objectivity, and independence. “Now, more than ever, we are fulfilling our duty to inform the Spanish-speaking audience in the US, and doing so in a responsible, not an alarming way,” he said.
As for pressures, he mentioned there is none and if there were, he wouldn´t accept it. “We are aware of the huge need the audience has to receive reliable information amidst a crisis that affects us all and is unprecedented. The only pressure is to be more loyal than ever to the values of journalism. Luckily, Noticias Telemundo is part of an absolutely independent organization (NBC News) and we can focus exclusively on what is most: keeping our community informed. That is why we are doubling our newscasts to respond to this serious crisis,” he ended.
