At the 34th edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), Melissa Cobb, VP of Kids & Family at Netflix, and the Academy-winning director, Guillermo del Toro (La Forma del Agua), spoke about Netflix’s bet on children’s and family content, highlighting Mexican entertainers as the stars.

“The great talent of Mexican creators plays an essential role in our vision of children’s and family content. We are thrilled to help their unique and personal stories to travel in order to connect with families worldwide. Today we are proud to strengthen our relationship with Mexico,” explained Cobb.

Netflix is preparing three productions directed by Mexican directors: Pinocchio (2021), a project that Guillermo del Toro had dreamt of all his life, which he will additionally write and shoot as an animated musical frame by frame; Maya and the Three (2021), a limited, animated series, written and directed by Jorge Gutiérrez (El Libro de la Vida, El Tigre), set in mythical Meso America-inspired world, and Las Leyendas 2, from the production company Ánima Estudios, to be launched at the end of 2019.

These projects join other titles that are being produced in Latin America and Spain, such as Klaus, Netflix’s first animated family, that narrates how the legend of Santa Claus began, and is directed by Sergio Pablos; Raise the Bar, by the Chilean Fernanda Frick and Go! Vive a Tu Manera, the first Latin American musical for children and pre-teens.

The director and writer Manolo Caro, winner of the Premio Maguey as a Director at the FICG, said about La Casa de las Flores, that it has already entered its third week in production in Mexico, and still has a long way to go, since it is estimated that the shooting will finish at the end of the year. He shared that they are writing the third season, that will probably be the last.
