Crossover Karla Souza
The Crossover Award of the 2022 PRODU Awards was bestowed to the Mexican actress Karla Souza for her three decades of an artistic local and international career. Souza thanked for the award from Los Cabos International Film Festival, where she is presenting her film La Caída, which took ten years to make and premiered this Friday the 11th on Prime Video.
“It’s a very powerful story that features real facts about Mexican divers, high-performance athletes, and the abuse of power they endure in their careers to fulfill their dream.” The actress, who waited three years to play the role, says that she was inspired by the stories of the divers themselves.
For Souza, the film Nosotros Los Nobles was a turning point in her career. “It was a film that we made without thinking it was going to be the hit it was.” In her opinion, thanks to this production she was able to leap to Hollywood, it was her true crossover.
Regarding the participation of Latinos in Hollywood, she assures that it is increasing, and also for women. “For example, at the Morelia Festival there was a wave of Mexican female filmmakers and, for example, eight out of ten of the films competing were made by women, we are achieving a very strong movement. I also know many Mexicans who are writing American series.”
She considers that in the US there is an increased interest in projects in Spanish. “We are seeing that streamers like HBO Max or Hulu or, even, Netflix are wanting to do projects for global, but in Spanish.”
“This is an achievement due to all the work of those before us. Our culture will take us far.”
She believes that her outstanding career in Mexico helped her make that leap to the US, which “was definitely the key.” However, she noted that nowadays there are many agents who search for talent that does not even speak English. “More and more they want to do authentic projects and have Latin American talent.”
