For the independent creators, the decision to call off Natpe’s in-person conference was a turnover, since face-to-face contact with people is very important to accurately convey the spirit of the projects, said Pablo Orden, president of Injaus. “For us, without access to these face-to-face markets it’s complicated because meeting personally allows us to listen to the client’s problems, or explain how a project can be adapted to certain needs,” he said, after commenting that pitching a project through Zoom is not easy. “It demands a talk, a glass of wine, and a meal.”
Their plan at Natpe was to launch Secreto de Amigos, by Marisa Quiroga (The Game of Keys), the story of four women friends who share the lover without any one of them knowing. Then the lover begins to blackmail them, threatening them to tell their husbands, who have important positions.
He regretted missing meeting at NATPE with European production companies interested in projects and with the ability to travel easily both in Europe and in America, which he considers is not easy to find, and that successful content travels better. These companies just work on developing projects that can travel to Europe, integrating casts or situations that are outside of Mexico, or isolating them so that they can take place anywhere.
“I had quite an external agenda,” he said. “We are facing the globalization of content. We live it with The Game of the Keys, which already has a film in Spain and another one is being considered in Germany”. He pointed out that they are looking for strategies so that based on the format, they adapt to production needs.
“Traveling and meeting with people is necessary. Especially when you are selling an illusion, not a finished series that I am showing, I have to sit down and shape it. It is not something tangible. Conveying a feeling that a book intends to share is hard to do over Zoom,” he said.
He is confident about returning to the markets, perhaps in another way, but they will return, and for now, it is time to travel and visit potential buyers.
