The director of the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE), Jorge Sánchez, closed the inaugural ceremony of the Gabriel García Márquez Studios with moving words about the writer’s relation with Mexican cinema and the achievements they have reached.

“Thank you to Epigmenio and Verónica. Tonight I am the bearer of a message from Rafael Tovar and Teresa, who congratulate them for this initiative that will enable this place to be an unequivocal site for creation. Latin America will find in these studios an extraordinary space for their stories to take shape and color. Surely yellow butterflies and flowers will fill the days of work. Our Gabo´s wit, humor and talent will travel throughout this center just by evoking his name,” he expressed.

Sánchez explained that García Márquez played an essential role in the development of new Mexican cinema. “The Colombian author used to say: ‘Undoubtedly, there is already a Latin American cinema, but we don’t pay attention to it ourselves.’ But there are some news, not everything has been told. Audiovisual needs us to tell more stories.”

Currently there are more than 27 million viewers of cinema made in Mexico and they expect to reach 29 million by the end of 2016. Another achievement was the creation of the Week of Mexican Cinema worldwide.

“Love for Mexican cinema will be eternal as long as we continue to surrender to it,” he concluded.
