BBC Studios is betting on having a solid year in dramatic series with productions such as Sanditon (8×60’), The Mallorca Files (10×60’), The North Water and Pure (6×45’).
“It is a very strong year for drama and we have shows such as Sanditon, Andrew Davies´next big project. We just witnessed the launch of Les Miserables on BBC1 in the UK, acclaimed by the critics and the audience as well. Sanditon is its next big project, based on the last unfinished work by Jane Austen and it has a fabulous cast. I think it will be a hit here in the UK and in the whole world, including Latin America because it talks about those universal stories: class differences, love, relations, power games, that will be beneficial for the audience,” expressed Liam Keelan, director of Scripted Portfolio at BBC Studios.
He added that the BBC productions that have been more successful in Latin America in the last year are those that cover universal topics. “Obviously, crime, McMafia was a great show for us last year. A period show like Les Miserables should do very well in Latin America. We have big shows on the way in different genres, like Good Omens that will come out on BBC 2, fantasy-science fiction style, but with great talent: Michael Sheen and David Tennant” he detailed.
When consulted about the changes digital platforms have generated, he answered that they are making short formats and scripted episodes of shorter duration: 10 to 15 minutes. “At BBC we are in a privileged position because we offer a great range of dramas,” he ended.
