Jennifer Salke, director of Amazon Studios, Javiera Balmaceda, director of Original Spanish Speaking Content in Latin America and Alonso Aguilar, director of Original Local Content for Mexico, announced that Amazon Prime Video is planning to invest US$300 million in Mexico for the next three years, to develop local content, according to an interview in Forbes magazine. These resources will be used for some 50 original productions, with a focus on the consumer.

“For us, it is very important not only to have diverse channels and that our content consolidates around the world. Original content created by local artists and voices is key and it’s exciting to see the team that is building this here. Local production is part of the whole world experience,” said Salke.

Amazon Prime Video already has productions in Spanish that have worked for global audiences. Such is the case of the reality show De Viaje con Los Derbez or the productions Pan y Circo, by Diego Luna, or LOL: Last one laughing, also by Eugenio Derbez, which are watched by millions in Spanish-speaking regions, but also English speakers.

The OTT platform market is extremely competitive. From a value of US$104,110 million in 2019, the value increased 55%, to US$161,370 million by the end of 2020, according to InPlayer. This figure will continue to rise in the coming years.
