Álex de la Iglesia received a tribute for his career at the Guadalajara International Film Festival. The Spanish filmmaker, who gave a master class at the film event, announced his new period miniseries for Netflix titled 1992.
“I am very excited because it’s not every day you get a call saying: come to Mexico, we’re showing your movies and you’re being remembered here. This confirms that movies generate force, energy, and soul. One of the advantages of living in this wild place that is Mexico is that they live life with intensity, and you can see that in the movies,” commented de la Iglesia.
Regarding the possibility of making a third season of the series 30 Monedas for HBO Max, he said: “We’ll see if I can continue the series; everything is written to make it happen. If I can’t find a platform or TV channel to produce it, I’ll do it on my own.”
NEW SERIES FOR NETFLIX
“1992 is the title of the miniseries I’m preparing, starring Paz Vega, Marian Álvarez, Carlos Santos, and Gorka Lasañas, among others. It’s a different series, with a different tone. The story is about bodies found with a common characteristic, a ‘Curro’ in the hand, the mascot of Expo Sevilla 92. This leads to the story of Amparo, who lost her husband in a strange explosion and starts looking for answers with her only friend, a security guard and ex-police officer.”
“It has been very difficult to shoot; we had to recreate the Sevilla of Expo 92, an abandoned and terrifying expo, so it was complicated in terms of production. But Netflix was there, and we already had experience with this type of super-production. After 30 Monedas, we know how to get ourselves into trouble.”
Regarding the current state of genre cinema, the filmmaker expressed: “I believe there is an evolution in genre cinema, especially in horror.”
“We are experiencing a revolution in storytelling, with authors who drive me crazy and who are doing new things, which shows the evolution of the genre,” he concluded.
