On November 28, 2016, in the State of Antioquia, Colombia, an aircraft belonging to the Bolivian company LaMia collided with a hill, leaving 71 dead and 6 survivors.
This horrific accident resulted in the death of nearly the entire staff of the Associação Chapecoense de Futebol. This is one of the biggest flight tragedies in the history of football and is the starting point of a new CNN en Español exclusive documentary, in which a team of journalists led by CNN en Español’s correspondent Francho Barón, conducted a thorough investigation for more than a year in six countries.
Last April, the official investigation led by Colombia concluded that the Bolivian company, LaMia, was a company with multiple organizational, economic and operational deficiencies that compromised the safety of its flights. Also, that the crew decided to continue with a flight knowing that they did not have the fuel necessary to reach their destination with guarantees. The lack of fuel caused the engines of the aircraft to stop working, unleashing the events that led to the fatal accident a few kilometers from the airport.
CNN en Español has worked with over 60 sources in 10 countries and has analyzed hundreds of documents to reconstruct the story of an airline that had systematic irregularities.
Chapecoense: The Dark Side of a Flight Tragedy attempts to answer some key questions: What was the real cause of the tragedy? Was the pilot really to blame, or could the authorities of three countries have avoided this accident? Was there corruption or influence peddling allowing the airline to operate? Who are the unknown characters in this story? Who should take responsibility for the accident?
CNN en Español presents DocuFilms: Chapecoense: The Dark Side of a Flight Tragedy on Sunday, June 10th at 8pm ET, with reruns on Monday, June 11th at 1am; Thursday, June 14th at 10am; Saturday, June 16th at 9am and Sunday, June 17th at 2am and 4pm.
