América TV: Open TV is not dying

Éric Jürgensen, CEO of América TV

Éric Jürgensen, CEO of América TV, expressed that open TV is not dying as digital media want to make people believe. “What is happening is that TV channels are turning into multiplatform content-generating companies.”

Jürgensen added that many statements that are not true are being made, such as the fact that children or teenagers don´t watch television anymore. “In Perú, the segments that are watching more TV on América TV are children and young people aged 5 to 35. If you produce content, they are going to watch it: maybe on their mobile phones or computers, but that doesn´t worry us, as long as they watch the content and tomorrow Ibope measures those contents.”

The executive is also in favor of long contents, like classic telenovelas. “If you have a good story, the more chapters you have, the better.”

To give an example, Jürgensen highlighted the duration of his successful production Al Fondo Hay Sitio, with 33 rating points and 47% of share in average, which lasted 1,600 hours, with almost eight years of duration.

The fact that in Latin America there was a boom over Turkish telenovelas is, according to Jürgensen, a symptom that the leaders of classical telenovelas abandoned the format. “They have looked for comedies, the topic of drug dealing, changed the essence and left it on a silver tray to Turkey, who brought very good stories.”
