Moisés Naím, writer and researcher, was who created the original idea of the series El Comandante (60×60’), produced by Sony Pictures Latin America, reported exclusively to PRODU Angélica Guerra, SVP and International Production general director from Latin America and Hispanic US. “Moisés Naím was who approached Sony with the story of Hugo Chávez, and we said ‘yes’ from the first day.”
Guerra said that the series is not only the most ambitious of SPT, but also one of the most expensive of Latin America, and the most complex production they have done in staging.
Naím explained that this story began with a book he wrote entitled The End of power (El Fin del Poder). “A publisher asked me to write another book that broaden the ideas of The end of power, and I did it. When I was about to deliver it, I decided that I didn’t want to do it again. That meant one or two years of writing and talking about that. I felt I had inside me a story that I wanted to tell as fiction and to the great public. And that is TV. With the privilege of having Sony behind this.”
For Sony it’s not a biography, but a political and human drama inspired on real facts, combined with fictional stories and universes. “We are going to talk about many developments, many universes. We have allowed ourselves to create a lot of fictional characters and stories that will go with the central story of Hugo Chávez” Guerra said.
