Lemon Studios: Scriptwriting changed due to differences between the experience of watching a movie in theaters and on OTT

Billy Rovzar, CEO and producer of Lemon Studios addressed the strategies for releasing movies and the changing dynamics of the entertainment industry, especially regarding the differences between theatrical screenings and streaming platforms. Rovzar’s takeaway is that the experience of watching a movie in theaters remains unique and special.

He noted that watching a movie in the comfort of a bed cannot compare to the excitement of watching it in person in a movie theater. This paradigm shift has led to films that could be released directly on streaming platforms benefiting even more from being released in theaters first.

Rovzar highlighted that there are film genres, such as horror, that have better results by being screened in cinemas. Despite the tempting offers of streaming platforms, he said there are certain films he prefers not to release directly on platforms since the experience in theaters adds an emotional and tense component that is difficult to replicate at home.

He mentioned that the screenwriting approach has also changed due to the differences between both experiences. In films intended for the big screen, the narrative must capture the viewer’s attention from the beginning and throughout the film. To achieve this requires a faster, more exciting approach to storytelling.

Furthermore, for Rovzar, the movie release strategy has evolved. Previously, the business model was more rigid, with a theatrical release window followed by a period where it was released physically, and after came the display on streaming platforms. Now, there is more flexibility and adaptation to public preferences. Some films are released at once on streaming platforms, while others enjoy a stint in theaters before hitting smaller screens.

Regarding sustainability in film production, Rovzar shared that Lemon Studios adopted eco-friendly practices two decades ago. They contribute to planting trees to offset carbon emissions and have made efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their productions. He also emphasized the importance of respect on set and how Lemon Studios is committed to a respectful and professional work environment.
