Martha Higareda: Fuga de Reinas for Netflix is one of the biggest production challenges I have faced

Martha Higareda, actress, creator, and producer, commented that Fuga de Reinas for Netflix is a comedy road trip featuring four friends that escape from the city after a personal crisis. The trip, a succession of complicated and bizarre situations, gives them the opportunity to value friendship, and sisterhood, as well as to learn about their own vulnerability and also strength, to deliver a message of self-worth.

“The production was a challenge because a road trip is always very difficult. The actresses —I among them— traveled in an open-top car on the highway and it was very hot, which brought problems such as keeping on the same wardrobe,” explained Higareda, who wrote the story from friends’ and family’s anecdotes.

It was filmed in seven and a half weeks in different locations in Mexico City, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. Some of the scenes were shot in Mexico City —pretending it was on the coast— and in the exteriors in Yucatán and Quintana Roo, so they also had to take care of details to make it look believable.

The cast included Alejandra Ambrosi (El Club de Los Insomnes), Paola Núñez (Bad Boys para Siempre), Valeria Vera (Elvira, Te Daría Mi Vida Pero La Estoy Usando), and Claudia Pineda (El Inmortal), alongside Higareda.

Higareda explained that the four friends are Marilú, very dedicated to her family; Paty, in love with her husband but everything ends up focused on him; Estrella, who is single and does not want to get married, and Famela, a hard worker, but dominant with her husband. The trip takes place when Marilú’s husband forgets their anniversary for the third consecutive year, the friends meet and decide to take the trip they always dreamed of, but without telling their families.

The production team included Higareda, her sister Miriam, her production company NeverEnding Media, and Alexis Fridman of Perro Azul. “We have already made three films with Alexis, and we make a great team,” she said, adding that they assembled a “dream team” with director Jorge Macaya, and director of photography, Mich Castro.

“Macaya is an incredible director. This is his debut feature. I had worked with him on Cásese Quien Pueda, and we both have a very similar sense of humor, almost like telepathy,” she explained.

Higareda and Alexis approached Netflix for the first time, explained their project and they immediately liked the idea. “It’s been amazing working with Netflix, they have given us all the creative freedom and have embraced us in a great way,” she said.

She shared that she is writing a new and directing it, and she is thrilled about it. “Being my first film as a director, I want it to be a Mexican film.”
