Showrunner Alejandro Aimetta: It’s important to standardize the industry and make it more professional

Alejandro Aimetta, author of El Secreto de Selena, El César and Hasta que te Conocí, is the showrunner, director and author of the series Maradona: Sueño Bendito, produced by BTF Media, Dhana Media and Latin We, which premiered on October 29 on Amazon Prime Video.
He alone directed only 10 episodes: those filmed in Argentina, Uruguay, and Mexico. In Spain he co-directed with Roger Gual (Las Chicas del Cable, El Desorden que Dejas, Élite), and in Italy with Edoardo De Angelis (The Vice of Hope, Indivisible).
“Shooting the series was epic, I knew from the beginning that it was going to be a big production and it was going to take time and effort, but I never imagined how much. But the truth is that it has been as complex as satisfactory,” he said.
He said that the project took five years of work. It began with a research process, then the writing of scripts, a year of castings, plus a year of rehearsals and pre-production, to which was added almost a year of filming and two of post-production, which was delayed by the pandemic.
“We recorded in five countries and over 6,000 people were involved. We worked with actors and crew from all over the world and it was translated into more than 20 languages,” he explained.
Regarding the role of the showrunner, he believes that current productions imply teamwork, but having a macro look and a person responsible for all the processes, from beginning to end, becomes essential.
“For me the showrunner is essential and I hope that the industry begins to acknowledge it and that we begin to educate the next generations in order to, not only, make this a standard, but also many activities behind the camera that are not fully regulated or are in need of a legal update,” he said.
Aimetta is currently working on several projects for platforms, but at the moment he can’t make any comment, nor talk about the second season of Maradona: Sueño Bendito.
For Aimetta, audiovisual content and entertainment constitute a very necessary industry: “Cinema and television saved my life and showed me realities that I could not conceive in my context and this will continue to happen to others: we prompt empathy and emotions. That’s why it is important that the entertainment industry standardizes and becomes more professional and raises the parameters, especially since we have an increasingly demanding audience and we all are competing with each other,” he concluded.
