Cecilia Gómez, Dubbing and Localization manager at Labo, spoke at Mipcom about the growth the dubbing market has had in the last few years and the challenges this has posed, not only in terms of technology, but especially regarding acting.
“Platforms open up a content that is not only limited to the US, as we were used to, but include the rest of the world. There are already contents from countries such as Japan, Russia, Germany, and Norway, therefore, now, the demand is greater and there are greater acting challenges. It is necessary not only to adapt to a society we know and see relatively closely, as is the US, but to grasp how, for example, a Russian person expresses happiness, and find the way to adapt it to Spanish,” explained Gómez, who also mentioned that it is a challenge that is transferred to the direction, production, and translation work, which have to be done very carefully to ensure the quality of the final product.
Edgardo Mejía, Commercial manager, expressed that the new platforms have generated a new demand they did not forecast, which has helped them grow a great deal. “In the past, everything was centralized in a few groups, and now everything has grown and the challenge is to continue ensuring quality with the new standards and the new speed”.
The Mexican company has dubbed productions such as the most recent saga of Los Caballeros del Zodiaco, Bohemian Rhapsody, La Forma del Agua, among others.
