Televisa: Connectivity is an instrument of development

Maribel Ramos-Weiner| December 16, 2014

Emilio Azcárraga, president of Grupo Televisa, inaugurated this past December 8th, the third Communications Forum in Veracruz, Mexico. At a round table discussion that included Randy Falco, president of Univision, and Julio Linares, VP of the Board of Telefónica, Azcárraga emphasized the importance of connectivity in Mexico and said that Televisa has already become a telco.“Throughout time, Televisa has become a telecommunications company that seeks to compete to bring users greater connectivity, more speed and better rates, combined with quality content. I’m convinced connectivity is an instrument of development. We need the country to be connected to promote development,” said Azcárraga. He said communications companies need to reinvent their business models in response to technological changes: “We’ve always been a company based on the production and distribution of content using any technology within our reach.”At the round table, Falco said it’s important to pay more attention to the U.S. Hispanic market. “Not doing is dangerous: they are 10% of the electorate and represent a US$1.3 billion economy. If considered separately, it would constitute the world’s 16th largest economy,” added Falco.
