President Peña Nieto enacts Mexicos Federal Telecommunications Law and announces new public TV network

Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto enacted the Federal Telecommunications Law after full approval by the Mexican legislature, and announced a new public TV network. The law will govern broadcasting in the country and, according to Peña Nieto, emphasizes the importance of telecommunications as a public service and reaffirms the oversight of the government in the area.In his speech, President Peña Nieto said: The reform allows the two new commercial TV networks currently in the bidding process before the Federal Institute of Telecommunications to compete on level playing field, thus expanding the availability of content. He also announced the new public TV network will be named Sistema de Radiodifusión del Estado mexicano (Mexican State Broadcasting System).In regards to cable subscribers, he added: [they] will get all the public channels at no additional cost. Similarly, networks are forbidden from obtaining exclusivity on any content, programs or events deemed to have broad appeal for viewers.The Mexican leader said one advantage of the new law is the inclusion of people with disabilities. This reform has many positive advantages. It was created to benefit users. The reform also provides Mexico with greater opportunities by securing the inclusion of digital, the integration of our regions and telecommunications access for people with disabilities, he added.
