The Hispanic signal HITN has spent about the last 10 days without broadcasting due to the floods in New York caused by Hurricane Sandy. The HITN headquarters are in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, an area that was declared a mandatory evacuation zone. José Luis Rodríguez, president of the network, commented that even with all of the precautions taken, the water level exceeded that of all past floods. The network’s building and teams were compromised, with waters that reached more than five feet. Rodríguez is calling out to the television industry to help find him a 750-kilowatt generator that would allow the network to get back on the air throughout this time when the Hispanic community needs a medium of communication. “The losses have been between US$3 and 4 million. This will take various weeks to reestablish” he said to PRODU.The executive said that they have reached a deal with Intelsat to be able to upload programming for the operators of paid TV that distribute the signal, but this doesn’t solve the problem of live transmissions – what they need the generator for. The majority of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, which houses about 300 small companies, has remained without power, and the three available generators are insufficient to provide energy for all the area. “The system has already shut down three times”.
