Salinas, co-anchor of Noticiero Univisión and the news magazine Aquí y ahora, celebrates her 30-year career on Hispanic TV
(Maribel Ramos-Weiner). María Elena Salinas, co-anchor of Noticiero Univisión and the news magazine Aquí y ahora, has had a prominent 30-year career in U.S Hispanic TV, along which she has proudly observed the changes of the medium and of the network in particular.I believe we have grown not only in quantity but also in quality. We now compete directly with English-speaking channels. We have become the type of company that make people quit other jobs to come to work with us. Hispanic TV was seen as something that was done in an effort to create something big. Well, now its the other way around: Univisión is that big thing, said Salinas proudly to PRODU.One of the greatest satisfactions is witnessing the evolution of the Hispanic community and being able to offer information tools to aid its betterment. Before, we did not have any political representation at any local level, she says, adding that was the moment when she realized there was a great challenge. Informing people about their rights and responsibilities: becoming citizens, and making well-informed, educated electoral decisions. It is one of my greatest professional satisfactions to see this realized. And at the personal level, my daughters, added Salinas.Regarding the role of new media and social networks, she says we are connected globally. I believe we are going to try to connect to our audience more and more through technology, she added.
