Equal Pay Day, saw the launch of AAUW’s Lady Dollars, a campaign that uses a Google Chrome Extension to show the real cost of pay inequality on retailers online, starting with Amazon and Walmart. In the United States today, women are typically paid 20% less than men. Lady Dollars encourages people to act in support of equal pay all year, not just on Equal Pay Day. “Many people are aware of the gender pay gap, but they don’t realize just how much it impacts women’s daily lives, from the price for groceries, gas, college tuition, you name it” said Cordy Galligan, AAUW’s VP, Marketing and Communications. “Progress starts with having the right conversation, and we want Lady Dollars to spark a renewed understanding and movement to help end the pay gap every day.” Lady Dollars shows the harm of the gender pay gap on a practical level. In addition to the Chrome Extension, which adds 20% to product prices, the campaign website provides information, resources, and a video, all designed to educate and encourage action to close the gender pay gap. The extension will be updated throughout the year to reflect every Equal Pay Day.The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has worked for more than 130 years to improve the lives of women in real ways, and yesterday’s launch of Lady Dollars makes it simple to take action.
