With over 38.5 million pictures and selfies sent from smartphones Brazil 2014 becomes the social media World Cup

The World Cup Brazil 2014 has been nicknamed the “Social Media World Cup” or the “Selfies World Cup” as a huge volume of data was sent from its stadiums, equivalent to 38.5 million pictures as the last 16 round ended, according to information provided by telecommunication companies.According to SindiTelebrasil (Portuguese acronym for National Union of Telephony and Mobile Cellular and Personal Services) during the last 16 matches, the traffic generated by the smartphones at the stadiums was equivalent to 8, 000 pictures per minute, or 4.4GB data per minute in the highest traffic period (pictures averaging 0.55MB through mobile networks -3G y 4G- and Wi-Fi hotspots).This performance tops by 33% the group stage, as the equivalent to 6,000 pictures per minute were sent, in the highest traffic period, from kickoff to halftime of every game.In the last 8 matches the data volume was equivalent to 6.5 million pictures, or 3.5TB. As for sent data amount, Brazil vs. Cameroon locates in the first place with 1.6 million pictures on the social networks, followed by Belgium vs. Russia, with 1,5 million; Argentina vs. Bosnia with over 1.4 million; and Colombia vs. Uruguay with almost 1.4 million pictures. In order to measure the total traffic, a period of 7 hours was used, starting three hours before and two hours after every match. The total infrastructure at the stadiums is 4,738 installed antennas.
