9 de octubre de 2013

Los EKOCENTER mejorarán el bienestar de comunidades de 20 países a finales del 2015

Coca-Cola, DEKA I+D, IBM, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), McCann Health, NRG Energy ( NRG ), Qualcomm Technologies and UPS announced an alliance whose purpose will be the development of EKOCENTERS, kiosks designed to improve the well-being of needy communities by late 2015.Coca-Cola’s announcement spurs into action its 2012 commitment with DEKA I+D to provide potable water to communities using the SlingshotTM water purification system. Between 1,500 and 2,000 EKOCENTERS are planned to be established, bringing these water purification units along with other services to communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America by late 2015.Every EKOCENTER will offer a range of locally adapted products, services and resources that can include drinking water, sustainable energy, wireless communications, refrigerated storage for vaccines and health education, plus opportunities for creating businesses and community development.Women and entrepreneurs in local communities will be contracted to operate each EKOCENTER, creating new job opportunities in communities where these kiosks operate.“EKOCENTER represents an investment in the future prosperity and progress of some of the most fragile and at-risk communities we serve” says Muhtar Kent, chairman and CEO of TheCoca-Cola Company. “Through EKOCENTER we have the ability to change lives by offering access to safe drinking water and other needed resources, all while empowering local entrepreneurs”.This collaboration is the first step in Coca-Cola’s long-term vision of implementing thousands of EKOCENTERS worldwide over the next decade. Meanwhile, a trial site has been opened in Heidelberg, South Africa, and plans exist to install an additional pilot in late 2013.
