Ford announced it will soon boost the number of the automaker’s employees who can drive to work in electric vehicles, thanks to a new recharge network in the workplace that will soon be a feature of almost all Ford plants in the United States and Canada.Installation will begin at the end of this year and will be put into practice at company installations throughout 2014.“Ford’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond our fuel-efficient vehicles to include our daily workplace” said Mike Tinskey, global director of vehicle electrification and infrastructure at Ford. “We know that a growing electrified vehicle infrastructure is key to making plug-in vehicles a viable option for more consumers. Ford is committed to doing our part to help grow that infraestructure”.Ford employees will be able to get a total recharge of the Focus Electric, as well as the two plug-in hybrids – the Ford Fusion Energi and the C-MAX Energi – at the company’s recharge stations. Initially the service will be free for employees for the first four hours. Ford estimates that it will cost the company some 50 cents to completely recharge a vehicle, saving employees up to $2.00 in gasoline every day.Ford now has more than 1,700 recharge stations at Ford distributors and company installations in North America. The new chargers in workplaces add another 200.
